When Do You Need Service Dog Letters.
There are a lot of people who assume that they need service dog letters to actually qualify to have a service dog. This is not the case in the United States as anyone with a disability will qualify to have a service dog. However, there are times when having service dog letters would be helpful and you need to be aware of this.
When Flying With A Psychiatric Service Dog
If you have a psychiatric service dog, you may have some issues when you try to fly with them. The Air Carrier Access Act covers taking your service animal onto an airplane. This act allows anyone with a service or support animal to take them into the cabin with you, but getting security to let you can be a harder task.
When people with disabilities arrive at the airport gate, they will be allowed to board without any problems with their service animal. However, when you have a service dog for psychiatric reasons you generally have to jump through some extra hoops. This is when service dog letters will come in handy and will prove that you require the dog to board with you.
The service dog letters that you have should be from a medical professional and it is not always something that you are asked for. The letter should state that the person writing it is a medical professional and that you are under their care. It also needs to state that you require your service animal to travel with you.
Service Dog Letters Help When Requesting Housing That Does Not Allow Pets
There are times when you will have to live in no pet housing with your service dog. If you are in this situation, you will need to have a service dog letter as proof that you need to have your dog with you. This comes from the Fair Housing Act and in some situations Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
When in this situation, you may be asked to fill out a form which details your disability and the reasons why you need to have your service dog. You will also generally be asked to submit a service dog letter which is written by your medical health professional. This form and letter will need to be submitted before you move into the accommodation and not after.
When Your Service Dog Needs To Accompany You To Work
Another time when you may need to have service dog letters is when you need your service dog to accompany you to work. It is important to note that an employer is not legally required to allow your service dog to attend work with you. However, they will need to consider that unless this happens it will result in hardship for you as their employee.
If you need to have your service dog with you, you have to advise your employer of this. A service dog letter is a good starting point if you need to argue your case, but your employer may ask for additional documentation. When you speak with your employer you should mention that you are asking for reasonable accommodation under the American’s with Disabilities Act.
